We are an air-mass thunderstorm at the height
of an Indian summer -- a cloudburst colliding
into a cyclone, raising the temperature of any
who wander through our sweaty inversion.
I soar above the earth buoyed on your thermals,
straight into a clap of thunder conceived by
lightning fever. A roiling heatwave travels
across our connection, evaporating the atmosphere
surrounding the eye of our storm. Your humid
breath wisps over the thermodynamics of my skin,
pushing cumulonimbus up the drought in my spine.
Muggy kisses trail down my body like volcanic ash,
a haze blurring the lines between our hurricanes.
And as the barometer spikes, my heartbeat quickens;
I am sucked into the vortex of your tropical storm.
This is for FuzzyHoser's Heat Contest! (for lack of anything else to call it.) I hope I'm not too late!

This one has been brewing in my head for some time, and I'm really glad I finally was able to translate what I was thinking into words. Speaking of words, I used a bunch of weather jargon for this, so I'll define the more obscure ones.

Air-mass Thunderstorm - Generally, a thunderstorm not associated with a front or other type of synoptic-scale forcing mechanism. Air mass thunderstorms typically are associated with warm, humid air in the summer months; they develop during the afternoon in response to insolation, and dissipate rather quickly after sunset.

Cloudburst- A sudden, intense rainfall that is normally of short duration.

Inversion- An increase in temperature with height. The reverse of the normal cooling with height in the atmosphere. Temperature inversions trap atmospheric pollutants in the lower troposphere, resulting in higher concentrations of pollutants at ground levels than would usually be experienced.

Daily Deviation

Heat Advisory by DrippingWords is a passionate romp of a poem, torrid and clever, that will leave you wanting more; the suggester notes the wonderful ambiguity of the poem "as a statement of passion and romance or as one of anger and dysfunctionality". Decent science poetry is a tough row to hoe, but done well it can really excite both  the mind and heart.
This certainly qualifies as a strong example! The only nit I can find to pick is suggesting "thunderclap" for "clap of thunder" in line six. It would maintain your rhythm a little more precisely, and add a more forceful tone to the piece (I speak from experience, having narrowly avoided being struck by lightning twice...once without even knowing it!).

Ooh, I'll definitely look at changing that, thanks!

And thank you for reading!

OMG, you've almost been struck twice! Oi vey.
